With Built-In Noise Cancellation Sony’s WF-SP700 Wire-Free Earbuds
The tech giant's second completely wireless earbuds stand
out from their gym-friendly competitors by offering digital noise cancellation
you can adjust with the touch of a button.
The all-new WF-SP700 earbuds are Sony’s second completely
wireless model. Designed with workout warriors in mind, the wire-free earbuds
offer a combination of distinctive looks, a highly customizable audio
experience with an Extra Bass option, and adjustable noise cancellation. The
latter sets the WF-SP700 apart from its gym-friendly, completely wireless
competitors.
The Sony WF-SP700 wire-free earbuds look like tiny, slightly
elongated pebbles. There are no sharp angles or edges on the earbuds, so it's
pretty much guaranteed that they'll be incredibly comfortable even before you
open their see-through box.
When it comes to fit and comfort, the WF-SP700 will live up
to the expectations set by their organic design. The earbuds have a secure and
exceptionally comfortable fit, which ensures that they'll stay in place during
any workout.
Each earbud has a conveniently placed button to control
essential functions. The right earbud button is for audio playback and phone
calls, while the left one is dedicated to controlling the noise canceling.
As expected, the WF-SP700 earbuds are splash- and
sweat-resistant. They have an IPX4 rating, so you won’t have to worry about
damaging them during your workouts.
The earbuds have a sleek carrying case with a built-in
battery. We love its swiveling cover, which is both cool-looking and
convenient.
Motivating Audio and an Extra Bass Feature Will Keep You Pumped
Up
Out of the box, the WF-SP700 wire-free earbuds offer a
well-balanced sound signature, which will appeal to a broad range of audio
tastes. Sony’s mobile app has a number of available presets, designed for
various types of content. They range from a dedicated option for speech, all
the way to an Extra Bass feature, which is great for workouts.
We still wish that Sony had equipped its latest offering
with Bluetooth 5.0 instead of Bluetooth 4.1 because the newer standard is a lot
more stable and offers a vastly improved wireless range.
Impressive Noise Cancellation Puts Them Ahead of Their
Wire-Free Competitors
The noise-canceling quality of the WF-SP700 is impressive,
especially considering their form factor. The feature is handily the headset’s
biggest selling point, as its gym-friendly wire-free competitors don’t offer
noise cancellation.
The earbuds did a solid job in tuning out unwanted ambient
noise at the gym and outdoors. You can turn off the feature with the press of a
button on the left earbud. A dedicated ambient mode is also available — it lets
in noise from your surroundings, so it’s perfect for outdoor runs and
exercises.
Mediocre Battery Life Is a Trade-Off for the Excellent
Noise-Canceling Feature
Sony rates the WF-SP700 earbuds as capable of lasting up to
3 hours between charges. Our experience with the headset came in line with the
manufacturer’s numbers. The earbuds’ carrying case has enough power for two
full charges.
Battery life isn't an impressive showing for wire-free
earbuds in this price point — Sony’s direct rivals from Jabra and Bose, for
example, offer 5 hours of battery life. The inferior battery endurance from
Sony is a direct trade-off for the noise cancellation the WF-SP700 earbuds
offer.
Built-In Noise Cancellation Put These Wire-Free Sony Earbuds
in a League of Their Own
The Sony WF-SP700 earbuds are sleek, comfy, and sound great.
Most importantly, thanks to their built-in digital noise cancellation, the
wire-free earphones will let you tune out your surroundings and focus on your
workout. In this instance, Sony’s wire-free earbuds are in a league of their
own, at least for the time being.
